Hidden Valley, Grayshott - Waverley Borough Council (Surrey)

In this project, we gained planning permission for a dedicated ‘Children’s Outdoor Forest Nursery’ by securing planning permission for the change of use of land within the Huntington and Langham Estate (Care Home). We also obtained permission to retain permanent outdoor structures that were already on site (alongside some improved structures). The instruction followed enforcement concerns and required a clear and carefully considered strategy to regularise the use.

The site has strict planning designations, including Countryside beyond the Green Belt, Surrey Hills AONB, AGLV, and SPA buffer zones. As such we developed a robust planning strategy, successfully managing the pre-application process and submitting a full planning application to Waverley Borough Council. The application demonstrated that the nursery preserved the character and ecological value of the area, with no adverse impacts on landscape or protected habitats.

The Hidden Valley forms part of the estate’s wider vision, promoting intergenerational engagement, wellbeing, and education through thoughtful stewardship of the land. The nursery plays an important role in this initiative, creating opportunities for younger generations to connect with nature while supporting the Estate’s broader community-focused objectives.

This project was particularly rewarding, as it represented a meaningful community initiative.

I volunteer at the Care Home with my son Fred, so it is a project very close to our hearts.
